Considering all the news media competition around us, it is urgent to promote reading and writing skills and literacy with children while they are young. This project will help children to build up their literacy and dispute with other children in Europe. They will discuss what they think is important in behavior and communication. They will learn that children in other countries are doing same things as they are doing. They will be curious about the world surrounding them. They will be hearing other languages and see other surroundings. They will exchange ideas about the book they read. Children will read a book of "Horrid Henry" and write and talk about what they liked or didn´t like about it. They will meet in Flash-meeting and do some Power Point project.

  • Subjects: Cross Curricular, Foreign Languages, Geography, Informatics / ICT, Primary School Subjects, Technology
  • Languages: English
  • Pupil's age: 9 - 11
  • Tools to be used: e-mail, Other software (Powerpoint, video, pictures and drawings), Video conference
  • Aims: Open up the map of Europe. The project will focus on three main objectives: Improving motivation for learning new skills. The project activities will make learning more attractive and interesting which will increase the pupil's motivation. Language learning and linguistic diversity. The project will focus on reading and communication. It will also make a point of letting the children exchange opinions about what they read. Improving literacy skills.
  • Work process: All children read a book about Horrid Henry. The Icelandic children read in their own language. All children answer a few questions about the subject in the book and write it in their own language. The Icelandic children will have to translate their essays to English with a help from the teacher/parents or other children that are capable of it and can write and understand English. All children will meet each other on Flash-meeting twice and tell their names, age and perhaps something else they want to tell or ask. In the other Flash-meeting they will exchange opinions about the book they read and how they felt doing the project like that. All children will do a PowerPoint project about the book and put pictures from their surroundings (classroom, outside the school etc.). They will also make audio files to let the others hear the pronunciation of their language.
  • Expected results: Twinspace on eTwinning website to share activities' outcomes. More reading and literacy abilities. Perhaps further collaboration between partners. Pupils will have a greater awareness of how easy it is to communicate to people in other countries that are far away. Improving skills in reading, writing and talking to other people.
